School of Thinking

The St Kilda Thinkers Group 3182

Let’s start with a KISS.      K.I.S.S. means Keep It Simple, SISOT!

We’re not trying to conquer the world — all we want to do is to have a monthly meeting with one to ten people to discuss THINKING in theory and practise. Like a book club.

I started my group in November. I’ll tell you the steps I took. You can use any of these steps and/or experiment with ideas of your own. It’s meant to be fun and not a burden of any kind. Manage your expectations. Enjoy the process. Here’s what I’m doing …

Step 1. WHAT – I gave my group a name. Mine is The St Kilda Thinkers Group 3182

Step 2. WHO – To save me time and effort I decided to use Meetup to help me organise invitations to my group.

Step 3: WHEN – I picked a day for my regular monthly meetings. I chose the last Tuesday of every month because my experience in running meetings has been that earlier in the week is better than late in the week as people have fewer engagements. The meeting is for 2 hours from 6 to 8pm.

Step 4: WHERE – I picked a venue for my first meeting. I thought about having it at home but it may be better to have it in a public place until people are comfortable and familiar. So I chose one of my favourite local spots The Pelican. It’s convenient, well known in St Kilda and great for coffee, drinks, tapas and food.

Step 5: HOW – The THEME for all our SISOT meetings for 2009-2010 will be The 59 Second Course in Thinking. (More about that in the following lessons).

Step 6: WHY - I showed up with no expectations other than that I would enjoy a glass of wine and some tapas even if no-one else showed up. One person did show up. Jennifer, a delightful person from the US who is changing careers from Journalism to Nursing. Wow! It was an enjoyable meeting and we both learned a lot.

Step 7: I set the date for my next meeting.

DFQ:

Design your first meeting. List some of the details here that you have decided on or you’re thinking about. Your design doesn’t have to be etched in concrete but just try and give some specifics like WHAT, WHO, WHEN, WHERE etc

I have one member ready to go.

The first meeting will be in the next few weeks most likely on a tuesday [seems to be a good day for it] during the day or evening, depending on attendees majority needs.

MHG: Does a multi person meetup via Skype count as f2f? I think so if we all behave the way we would in person. no typing, just talking etc. I should note that I would prefer face to face but skypes could be complimentary.

Third Monday of month meeting contemplated starting 24 th April 2010 as I will be away on 17th April.

Where – Illawara Club or Hurstville Library seem like a reasonable initial meeting place.

One person identified who is interested in joining SOT…will check if there are other SOT in my area.

Name of group to be determined after 1st meeting.

  3. Shan Guneratne Says:

I am yet to find members of SOT in my post code 2602 Canberra.

But at every opportunity I pass this concept to people I meet both at a social and professional level.

I do not drink alcohol as I believe it is an “antidepressant”. So having wine and socialising is NOT my cup of tea! I like to be MINDFUL every moment.

I have a cousin in Melbourne Victoria who passed on the SOT idea to me just like I’m passing it onto others I meet. We share a lot of NEW and POSITIVE THINKING ideas.

So until I find SOT members in Canberra 2602, I will continue with what I’m doing currently!

During the processing of options for a first meeting of the Imaginary Thinkers 94611, I had what I would consider a successful informal meeting with a business client as we wrapped up a project at the completion of a work day.

Discussion of shared similar experiences, we discovered that we were both great fans of the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conferences. She had attended one and our discussion centered on thinking and creativity and the future of possibilities for changes in thinking and advancements of our world. This resulted in my feeling quite fulfilled and satisfied with the sense that this was a perfectly satisfying start in directions I hoped to take my SISOT meetings.

A more formal time and place will be designated for the next meeting with the specifics for the future meetings to be mutually decided at that time.

We’ll plan to hold a Meetup once or twice a month on a Monday evening, for 2 hours (typically 6-8pm) and usually rotating between our favourite venues in postcode 2010 such as The Pond or The Lounge. Wh

During our first Meetup we’ll consider who else to invite, what theme we might like to pursue and what expectations we have for the Meetups (if any).

  10. Ethann Says:

I plan to hold my first meeting in February 2010, First Tuesday night of the month. I still have to decide on a cafe to use, but somewhere quiet would be good. I plan to setup either a facebook or meetup group and to invite people that I already know.

The name of my group at (SISOT 23321 Accra is x10thinkers) This the capital city of Ghana.

There is an old SOT member i wanted to start with and he is a very close par. We shall be meeting very early in January 2010. We are yet to fix a location and actual days of meeting but we have agree to be meeting.

It will be a great movement for us and we will do every thing to achieve that goal.

  13. Neville Says:

The name of the group will be “CHANNEL THINK” (SISOT 7162 is on the d’Entrecasteaux Channel in Tasmania)

There will be a small number of Foundation Members invited from my network. In turn these members will be encouraged to invite interested others.

Each week CHANNEL THINK will meet with a “theme topic” introduced by the SISOT. The meeting will commence with a SISOT (or nominee) lecturette leading to discussion and illuminations. The guiding principles of the meeting will be: Suspend Judgement; Free Wheel & Cross Fertilize.

The meeting will be held at coffee-o’clock Saturday at the comfortable local Peppermint Bay Hotel complex http://www.peppermintbay.com.au/

  14. Susan Says:

I am planning on holding my first meeting with somebody who I already know is participating in SOT lessons. I have discussed the SISOT role with them and they are keen to become part of a group to be founded in the postcode 3350.
Due to time constraints, I am not going to commence my recruiting drive until 2010. I will then start with my work collegues – who have been exposed in part to some of the ideas of SOT and encourage them to sign up for some lessons, with the added opportunity to join a group for a monthly discussion. From here I plan to move to my wider network group and invite others to join in.
It would be good for something to go out in a newsletter, advising others of the introduction of SISOT Postcode Groups so that people that I do not come into contact with are aware of the group being set up and could make e-mail contact if they are interested?
As I am holding my first meeting with somebody I know, I will hold it at my house and then together we can discuss other suitable venues for future meetings. We can also discuss timing of future meetings. I am involved in organizing functions for another association group in my area and find that breakfast meetings are suitable to many people so may well opt for a morning get together. Once I have a few members, I will also encourage them to recruit others to join in so that our group evovles into one that has all types of people in it – not just those I have contact with.

  15. TimY Says:

I started with the same last Tuesday of the month as Michael to allow time to formulate a plan of action. I set up a facebook group and invited all of my local friends to become a member. Four members have joined and I have found a great deal of interest in the meetings and in SOT. I have no way to know who ops in or out other than direct contact. When I have an opt out I hope to have an exit interview to discover the reason for the opt out. cvs2bvs!!! For the first meeting I believe the 59 sec course to be perfect and I am hoping I can listen more than talk for the first session by allowing the members to throw out some of their concepts on thinking. Everyone likes to express themselves and I want them to be enlightened andj feel they contributed too! I am starting with the location of a local restaurant which also has other social groups gather in a private room. I hope everyone is having fun too!

  16. Ben Ford Says:

Its different for me – I have a captive audience, but I have to compete for their mind share, and until january thats a battle I cannot win, So I am preparing the ground

    The seed –
I’ve just memed our HR manager that SOT would be a good part of our induction process for new staff, and something to include in our internal training processes.

    The fertiliser
now I’m going to print and circulate maybe 10 copies of software for your brain and leave them in social areas or pass them to people I think are likely to be interested

Then I’ll sit back and wait a while to see how the crop will germinate
