Err.. this intriguing situation is difficult to understand; coming to grips with it is challenging for someone like myself, on the outer periphery.

On the face of it, de Bono appears to have committed academic fraud—outrageous behaviour for anyone interested in maintaining professional integrity. No doubt some of his is threatened or diminished, even by the fact that questions have been raised.

However, this kind of chronic squabble can become toxic cumber for anyone sucked into its vortex. Any person who falls victim to the sort of sneakiness that is alleged here certainly has my sympathy and best wishes, but from my perspective, time is severely limited as it is. Modern life is an aknowledged expert in robbing us of opportunities to do our best work. As a sufferer of congenital distractee syndrome (CDS), I advise any prospective observer or participant to exercise appropriate caution (AC) in approaching any aspect of a squabble over academic attribution. Unless you are afflicted with a chronic overdose of spare time, don't get sucked in. Focus on what matters!

I just picked up de Bono's, "Think Before It's Too Late" off a bookstore shelf. This has to be one of the most irritating books I have ever read. The pompous blowing of the author's own trumpet makes the book feel like an extended chain letter. To claim that in the last 2400 years no one but him has come up with these thinking ideas is ignorant. It annoys me because I have been thinking this way for many years, I just never wrote it down in a book. Many statements are represented as facts but there are no sources for me to follow up on these statistical claims. There are definitely some good things in this book that have to be said, but a hell of a lot of paper could have been saved on the useless waffle.

Dear Sir

In my search to develop strong and effective teaching and learning materials i came across thinking hats and EDB was always the name linked to it. However having come across this site and done further reading I will now ensure that future ref. to thinking hats will be made to SOT and yourself as original author and EDB for the adaptations. I have had to make alterations to EDB colours as they have caused offense in some areas for example black hats are replaced with purple.

It has so difficult when ideas are 'abducted' and used with crediting the source I have been the victim of this too as i have tried to enable my students to discover and utilize their potential and skills. Thank you for your ethos of sharing and caring - I will continue to do the same as in the end it changes lives and gives hope as we lead our students into the amazing world of creative thought and development, which is so needed in todays world.

I initially had EDB as my most inspirational leader, however, having seen both u Michael at Torquay Surfworld museum re your SOT and EDB at Zinc in Melbourne, i tend to agree with your readers that EDB has stretch the truth to suit his own means as it is part of his 'business' story-telling modus operandi to make money!

I now have MHG as my most inspirational leader

Bravo (Iberian for brave) SOT I have always been a bit concerned over Edward. I think the original criticisms about his tendency to repeat are fair. I now understand where his ideas have come from. I am disappointed in him and his search for personal glory at the expense of supporters and mentors. I have chosen to stick with you chaps.

Dr. Hewitt,

In these most troubling of times, I have been searching for some "truth" or "fact" or "history", only to find the source. I have downloaded your book and in 37 days :) will report back.

I feel a sense of relief knowing that all knowledge, all thinking is an accumulation of centuries of ideas. I am not surprised at the "big-headedness" of Dr. Debono as there are others like him in other fields who take credit, and wealth, from the seminal works of others.

Hi Michael
You have done more for igniting a passion for thinking than anyone else because you believe that it shouldn't be proprietised - everytime I tried to pass on even the basics of Edwards - Lateral Thinking or your Hats as described in your story - the taxi meter ticked over and over. You talk to any professional facilitator who wants to teach thinking or use Edwards tools they cost a fortune so they go to other sources like Thinker Toys and your tools because they are for everyone. As you often said to me and showed by your prolific output there are a million new ideas out there. Maybe Edward doesn't have the same confidence so needs to charge to secure his next egg - Michael keep up the great work you are an inspiration to us all. You are getting your good Karma in this life!!
