#14 DFQ
Measurement is a very important skill for the brainuser to develop. Let’s look at units of measurement. It’s very helpful, when trying to measure things, to have a unit of measurement. Having a basic unit of measurement means you can keep score and then compare one score against another.

For example, the whole metric system uses a number of units of measurement based on the decimal (or 10) system. We have metres, litres, dollars and grams. So, if you want to measure how far you have to travel to work you can do so and the answer may be 10 metres if you work at home or 10 kilometres if you don’t.
You can use dollars to figure costs and overheads and to help control them and bring them down. You can also use dollars to figure revenues and sales results and help move them up.
Metrics – Measuring Your Job
The more you can bring metrics or measurements to aspects of your job, the more you can take control and the more interesting your job becomes. What things can you measure in your job?
- Costs – eliminations, reductions or increases?
- Accidents/safety – lower or higher?
- Sales calls – more or less?
- Delivery times – longer or shorter?
- Wastage – less or more?
- Materials used – more or less?
- Industrial disputes – fewer or more often? etc.
Decimal Cognetics
In the last lesson, we’ve already seen that a CVS can never be equal to a BVS. So, what exactly is a BVS?
A BVS is a decimal of a CVS. A CVS is also a decimal of a BVS. In other words, they are related by powers of ten. Sometimes a BVS is ten times smaller than a CVS. Other times it is ten times greater. From experience, it is usually the latter, but not always.
By decimalizing (yes, it is a word) cognetics we are introducing measurement into the brain software and we get more control. Cognetics now becomes a more useful brain tool. Remember, cognetics is decimal. In cognetics we use the number ten.
The deliberate or habitual use of the number 10 is called Tenpower.
The key to the practical use of this powerful perception switch – cvs2bvs – is the deliberate effort one makes to try to notice the BVS that is TEN TIMES better than the CVS.
So, for example, if your CVS is $1 then a BVS might be $10 (or it could be 10, if you owed $1). If the CVS is on one level, then the BVS can be found on a level TEN TIMES better than the CVS.
Ten times better may be ten times more, or ten times less, or ten units forward or ten units back. It’s the deliberate use of tenpower as a provocation to get you to escape from your CVS.
With practice, the “ten times” part of cognetics just becomes easier and easier. This is what tenpower is all about. Remember, mathematically, there are always millions of possible options (literally!) but you must deliberately look for them to see them.
Tenpower helps you to switch patterns of perception. That’s all. While it is not important that the number ten is accurately used, its use is a powerful escape mechanism. Take a leap with tenpower.
Inspiration
Check out this amazing design project by Ray Eames.
The design genius, Eames, was commissioned by IBM to make this movie about Powers of Ten. When I was designing the brain software – cvs2bvs – back in the 1980s I saw this movie and was inspired to include the X10 element in the software, so it became cvs x10 = bvs as a result of seeing this movie. This was made before computer graphics and here it is in its original presentation …
Examples
If the CVS is 1 gift, the BVS might be 10 gifts.
If the CVS is thirst, the BVS might be 10 mouthfuls of water.
If the CVS is one email, the BVS might be 10 emails.
If the CVS is one step back, the BVS could be ten steps forward.
If the CVS is ten steps forward, the BVS might be 100 steps back.
If the CVS is red, perhaps the BVS is green.
If the CVS is up, then the BVS may be down or even much further up.
If the CVS is to take, the BVS may be to give.
If the CVS is do it later, the BVS may be do it now.
If the CVS is 10, the BVS could be 100, or 1.
If the CVS is 100, the BVS might be 1000.
If the CVS is 1, the BVS could be one tenth.
If the CVS is where you are now, the BVS is take a quantum leap.
In cognetics, rightness is not as important as movement. Cognetics, using tenpower, enables you to move through information at a rate never before possible with only logic. And, in a rapidly changing world, movement to a better viewpoint is much more important to the thinker than defence of a current viewpoint.
The reason for tenpower is because there are always risks in thinking. It can be risky leaving the safety of a CVS to go out in search of a BVS. But if the rewards are so great, so worthwhile – a true quantum leap, an order of magnitude – then the reward provides its own motivation. You can now have the drive to escape inertia to move towards a BVS.

Tenpower
The habitual use of the number 10 gives a very useful measurement and a useful tracking and controlling device for the thinker or clever brainuser. Powers of ten is an extremely powerful warp-speed for moving through the cognos, the information universe.

In the unlimited universe of thinkspace, powers of ten helps us escape from the gravity of our CVS and to move out of orbit and explore the cognos, looking for a BVS.
DFQ #14:
What is one metric, or measurement, that you can focus on in your job?

The concept of time and its immediate value.

There are may metrics, I just to constantly look for them, get into that thinking mode.
February 4th, 2012 at 2:57 pm
To answer the question, the best metric I can focus on in my job is the amount of time it takes to fully complete one assigned task. Presently the entire amount of administration takes almost as long as the work, and so I occasionally postpone it. I need to do the administration immediately however this requires high mental flexibility (which has biological limits) or slowing down to allow the brain to adapt to widely varying skills.
To improve on the question, I note that my present job as an IT field engineer requires driving places and doing time consuming procedural work that can’t be optimised or improved by ten. My parent company probably considers an improvement of 1/10th of a metric as worthwhile. But what I can do to improve things x10 is to change jobs. By changing jobs I can use my experience to try to improve things x10, by changing WHAT tasks need to be done, rather than try changing HOW FAST tasks are done. So I must focus on changing jobs. And I guess, instead of applying for one management position, I should prepare to apply for 10, 100, or 1000.

I already focus on as many decimal, portions or probabilities possible. My job is survival, enjoyment of surviving, and a constant progressive evolution. I am constantly creating, writing my script as I want it to unfold. The good news is, what I want may not be what is best for me, therefore it doesn’t happen, and I am saved the burden of a mistake. Yet, I try to take it all to the max, be it a decimal of ten or a million, to infinity.
I reach to touch the any one side of the universe, and then the other. If it’s not enough, I’m sorry, but that’s all I’ve got.
Cheers, BW

That means we have to thoroughly understand, appreciate and evaluate their needs, before promoting what we provide. You may not sell them anything now, nonetheless, you may have gained their trust and respect, by evaluating their true needs, and that relationship may very well increase in value as new opportunities to work with you, confront them.

I wonder what Job do I actually have? I am a student with Art as a “hobby”; But, since it’s summertime I have no need of using the system on learning, rather, on learning art.
I currently create about 10 works of Art a day on a scale of 4 to 10 hours daily, This can be increased by creating instead, 20 works of Art on a scale of 6 to 16 hours, and the plan to include small [20-minute] naps throughout the day, such would increase my ability to be awake for longer time, thus, switching into a bvs.
What metric can I focus on in my job? the ultimate metric of time: I waste atleast 10 minutes every hour wasting time on complaining to myself about my back ache;
I guess so.

For me, the “time” factor, and time management skills. e.g. planning, 10-15 mins will now become 1-2 hours.
Action from planning, 1 hour to one full day of promotion of my work from the planning stage.
A day of promotion of my self employed work will lead to a week or even a months increase in profit.
Using metric conversion to multiply time certainly puts me into the “big picture” allowing me to see with the increased scope, clearer long term opportunities.
I feel less “bogged down.”
It opens my future to far greater opportunities.

DFQ #14:
What is one metric, or measurement, that you can focus on in your job?
For me listening would far outweigh everything else.By careful listening I will make sure I understand what people are offering me in ways of suggestions.
To make sure of my understanding I will ask how, when, where, why, what and who. Having satisfied myself that the person’s contribution has worthwhile merit then I will work on the best way to present this to top management in such a way that I have moved from a cvsx10 to a bvs in my presentation. It is extremely important that the person’s contribution is recognised and not stolen and presented as someone else’s idea

An interesting and well done movie.
I think the decimal system is a great invention of modern mankind. I have no problem with accepting BVS = 10CVS in an abstract and symbolic way. Abstract and symbolic, because the formula expresses a straight line with the slope of 10. At the same time, this assumption that processes in nature and society would be linear is true in specific cases only. Much (if not most) of the living nature obeys a logarithmic law, which also is a power of ten, but on a different scale.
In particular, linear thinking is the source of much confusion, false expectations, and erroneous conclusions. With the realization of this fact, I think the Power of Ten Law is OK.

Leave the house ten minutes earlier for work and greatly reduce the cost of getting there!
The long term savings to be gained from buying commuter rail tickets are very large and I always remind myself of this. I never get round to buying them though because i’m always in such a rush in the morning. I buy the day only ticket from the auto-kiosk thingy (it’s faster as I’m always rushing) when i should really just queue for the few minutes it would take and deal with the nice man behind the glass and save myself a packet.

Hello,
One metric I can focus on in my job is what I call “freetime”
That is time to take a step back and plan and improve the way I do things instead of simply racing around completing all of the tasks that I must do.
One way of doing this is to deliberately take 30 minutes every day to stop churning through lists of tasks and instead just sit and think how those tasks might be better done in a perfect world and then start moving towards it.

Number of words written. I will be able to write ten times the number of words if I drink one tenth of usual red wine intake the night before.
I usually have a positive outlook, but I’m also a sceptic. What’s so special about ten? Nothing in this lesson has convinced me that I should start applying ten to everything. Where’s the evidence? I’m also sceptical about selecting a ‘metric’, something that can be measured, to focus on. There’s no point in writing ten times the number of words if they’re crap. Not everything of value is measurable in units.

The cvs is reacting to other people’s issues and problems (pips). My important tasks (IT) get put on the back burner. A bvs is to manage the other pips and reduce the time spent on that by 10. Then increase the number of my IT by 10.
CVS other pips to BVS which is other pips/10
CVS my IT to BVS my ITx10
Of course, dealing with other pips is part of my role, however I can manage my day more effectively by reducing the amount of time on this. Perhaps i will teach these other people some thinking skills. This is now on my list of ITs!

My work involves the development and delivery of community engagement programs. Ironically, considering the current economic environment, the BVS metric of expansion by hiring more talent for my company would allow for the actualization of greater opportunity and growth.

Ten times the opportunities!
February 4th, 2009 at 6:43 am
One of my roles at work is to engage the workers and get them to start thinking about improving thier jobs. I need to multiply the amount of people I engage by 10. This would generate 10 times the ideas but more importantly, get 10 times the people thinking!
February 3rd, 2009 at 6:22 am
I am in a caring environment so to multiply my listening, empathetic and empowering tools will add value to those I come into contact with. Increasing awareness….muiltiplying that will be useful. An interesting way of moving forward for anyone. Thanks!

The amount of times I complete a task to 100%, 95%, 90% or less. Increase the most important tasks to 100% while delegating or eliminating tasks of lesser importance towards my goals.
January 29th, 2009 at 2:22 am
Number of times I get a customer into check.
January 23rd, 2009 at 1:54 pm
I am a data analyst and get a huge amount of report requests. I will use the power of 10 to increase my turn around time on these, which is a bonus as that will automatically impact on my “pro crastination issues”, which I will then decrease by the power of 10 and achieve an overall higher efficiency rate. This will also have an effect on my affectivity and accuracy as errors occur under high pressure, caused by pro crastination.
January 20th, 2009 at 11:30 am
how many measurements are you currently using
January 18th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
I will work fewer hours, delegate certain work & get the same amout of work done, giving myself more time for fun, play & relaxation.
January 15th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
One of my hobby is contortions . I can apply this power of 10 measurement system here. For instance. currently I am able to do a close back bend and by using this measurement my CVS x 10 will be a head-seat.
January 14th, 2009 at 6:29 am
Part of my wage is based on bonuses or commission which is figured on a 10 point system. Wage xhrs.x10 is the amount I must first bring in before seeing any bonus $ which then becomes 10% of sales above the base amt. So thats the measurement I’m most concerned with.

Since I am working on growing a segment of our business, two potential metrics are the number of new contacts I make and the number of conferences/papers/whitepapers I present.
January 5th, 2009 at 8:52 am
My key target at present is to reduce Lost Time Injuries and to reduce days lost through injury by implementing more effective Return to Work strategies.
A ten times improvement would be a great target.

I like the ten minutes one from Maria

More thinking to be done
December 29th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Order intake 10 times the current would make for a completely different business.
That’s my challenge.
December 26th, 2008 at 10:34 am
To focus on facilitating Non-English-Speaking Migrants to speak English more: confidentally; easily; comfortably; ‘naturally’, even tho’ it is a 2nd language for them; relaxed(ly); use it in more situations; even jokingly!; to realise ‘new’ is possible; to accomplish a small goal.
Measured, these units amount to the one Focus, but counted as a 10 and Mulitplied by the 10 of bvs they get a 100….well, on paper anyway…only joking.
December 26th, 2008 at 1:34 am
One excellent focus of my cvs and a measurement of this is related to time management at home; whereby my time is allocated in many scattered, different directions including many needed directions, impairing my progression to manage my personal life matters efficiently.
Considering the power of ten perspective and the exponential effect of this principle, my cvs- currently ineffective time management could be increased at least ten times if not 100, using this principle and rethinking those factors from an empirical, measurement perspective, my new bvs= 10 X at least in this instance, improved/better.
If I look for ten spare minutes every 100 minutes, out of an eighteen hour day, I will initially be at least ten minutes better off to allocate that time to constructive personal management use; and if I follow this as consistently as possible, I will be better off for a whole day by at least 100 minutes of each day for personal time management and organisation. This will enable me to focus more clearly on goals I wish to achieve as opposed to meandering aimlessly off track, and not achieving what I wish to.
18hrs=1080 minutes
Every 100 minutes for 18 hrs, gives you 10.8 times in eighteen hour period. Multiply that by ten minutes each time; I will have just over 100 minutes for the day, which is of personal time management moulded in with my other commitments.
A ten times at least improved bvs.

To change my CVS to BVS in my sales process.
Example Scenario:
10 Meetings per week = 1 Sale (CVS)
10 Meetings per week = 10 Sales (BVS)
In the above scenario CVS is achieved by demonstrating the same (current) behaviours. BVS is achieved through the demonstration of more effective behaviours i.e. better prospecting and targeting, meeting selection and sales process. There is no reason why 10 meetings per week can not equate to 10 sales. This result is only limited by the CVS. CVS mindset largely determines ‘what is’ based on ‘has been’ in the past.
Summation:
CVS = sales is 10% of meetings.
BVS = each meeting is a sale.

Now that is a really good question. I like the word One. People are ignoring that word and looking to make a greater list instead of Thinking and looking for The One.
Focus. Now there is a great word too. Goes with One.
You can focus on The One but if your list is spread out with more or greater, it’s harder to focus. See!! ..your question, though simple, has got me thinking. I like it.
Enthusiasm is good but needs direction. Practice is very dangerous I say, because if you are doing it Wrong, you get better and better at doing it Wrong. Get it right first, then practice or repetition yields.. Music ,Golf.

Profit. However the power of ten would be a longer term BVS. I would view this as a combination of thinking of how we might increase income whilst decreasing costs. Thus by doubling our income, a difficult but not impossible task and reducing costs by say 20% again difficult but not impossible would result in an increase in profit of over 3 times. nothing like the Ten Power but a good start, and by doing it again when all is settled would get us near to the ten times BVS

Productivity. Productivity for me comes in spasms or waves when my energy levels and motivation combine. Starting a new job tomorrow mean I do not know exactly what skill areas can benefit from the 10 x cognitive measurement however productivity or resisting the temptation of procrastination (usually on personal stuff) needs to be avoided.

Metrics at work . . .
Progress of my students: achievement – students’ ratings of their own attitude and confidence, attainment – progress against level descriptors and assessment foci.
Success of our programmes: reduction in fixed term exclusions, increase in attendance, length of stay in centre, students’ daily behaviour scores.
My effectiveness: lesson objectives met, targets achieved.
CVS2BVS . . .

Having recently thoroughly enjoyed “Software For Your Brain” (by the way thank you for making such a brilliant resource for everyone freely available) I have used X10 several times to get me through any procrastination I am indulging in. X10 has been brilliant in creating for me the opportunity to START.
I have been able to start by declaring “10 ideas on a page”, “10 phone calls at least”, “look at the document for 10 minutes”, “look for ten improvements” etc.
I have found that I am beginning to tune into more and more opportunities for movement based on 10 the more I usse the technology.

I think 100 times more sales (or even just 100 sales…) in a month would be a good measurement. But I think to do that 10 times more effort and work needs to be put into getting that 100 more sales.
November 24th, 2007 at 7:44 pm
At the moment I need to ten times as more in a tenth of the time. But I don’t think that is a good thing – leading a double life (school and business) has led me into a trap where I have prioritised – necessarily – school, but at the loss of business success.
The measurement I need to decrease is how much I think about what I have to do. A tenth of the time spent thinking about what needs to be done (and subsequently stressing) and ten times the time actually being proactive in getting stuff done.
November 23rd, 2007 at 12:24 pm
delegation to spend 10X more of my time on things I am highly effective at and 1/10th my time on timeconsuming managerial tasks.

CVS is “We’ve only got seven people on our team so it’s virtually impossible to complete all the work we should do in a given year.” BVS might be “With seven people, ten times better planning, ten times better resource allocation, and one-tenth the time spent gossiping/complaining/inessential task pursuit, we can probably do what needs to be done with a ten-fold quality improvement!” (I have no idea if this could actually be done, but it’s somewhat inspiring just to think it and write it down, I have to admit.)

November 16th, 2007 at 9:07 pm
I will use BVS=CVx10 as the drive to escape inertia to move towards a BVS.
Currently between jobs I shall make better use of my time (x10) instead of thinking “what will I do” I will spend 1/10th of my time doing this instead of allowing it into every activity I do during the day, that way I will benefit more from the (x10) extra leasure time I have at the moment.

“What is one metric, or measurement, that you can focus on in your job?”
I’m sort of retired, so focusing in on my job is not an option.
Focus in on my life perhaps.
Recently, I had the sense that I had been ‘phished’, for a thousand bucks.
On the phone, these guys were so good, so plausible. Top of the line in fact.
No complaints.
But within twenty minutes of our conversation I had been e-billed for $1000, which was not what I had anticipated.
I have since heard the recorded ‘verbal contract’, and of course, it’s binding.
They are that good at what they do.
I live in Amsterdam and ride my bike all the time.
And as I ride my bike and observe this charming city, I always seem to have some sublime sort of little mantra, tune, or idea going on.
But today, I had to call this company to try to get my cash back.
Because I knew that they were good at what they do, I was absolutely maintaining in my CVS that I felt that I had been ‘phished’, and was not looking forward to my conversation with them.
So this evening, on my way home, instead of ‘mantra’ on my bike, I ran through my mind, ‘a CVS can never be equal to a BVS’, and trusted it.
The result?
Well, tonight I spoke to Glenda, an excellent representative, and a credit to her company.
She offered me all sorts of very good alternative deals and offers, it’s her job after all, but the BVS of my situation precludes any offers.
So my best shot was sticking to my BVS, or HVS, Honest View of my Situation.
I stuck to it, and it seems that Glenda heard me.
The end result is that, via Glenda, there is resolution.
So, my Better View of the Situation is real.
I think that I’m going to get my cash back
I don’t know if I am allowed to promote companies via this forum, but I can say that astar.com are pretty good as far as travel/ticket agencies go.
They allowed my to realize my BVS .

I work in Manufacturing.
If you work in Manufacturing you are accustomed to being measured every which way posible. In my curent business we monitor and control performance against half a page of metrics. So it is difficult to select just one metric.
But I also work in a business that is Private Equity owned. It is a very driven business, as the most important single outcome is EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation). EBITDA is the cash available to repay the debt that hangs over the business.
It is awesome to think in terms of the BVs being 10 times greater in EBITDA than the CVS.
I am conducting a cost reduction brainstorming session this afternoon. The challenge I will give my guys is to reduce costs by a factor of 10.

My actions would be 10 percent more by BVS which is a radical transformation. Good.

March 15th, 2007 at 12:24 pm
CVS could be trying to put together a big project but without specifics, whereas BVS might be some tangible goal or outcome that might focus the attention and create a meaningful target
March 14th, 2007 at 2:27 pm
Instead of delegating one task I could focus on delegating ten tasks.

A people metric, how many people per day I can encourage to cooperate with each other to get each project I work on finished with a minmum of mistakes and tension.
March 11th, 2007 at 11:33 pm
CVS=time management; slightly disorganized
BVS=clearly defining priorities & goals, and steps needed to achieve
March 11th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
One of my biggest hangups is clutter, a better of the situation is to discard 10 times more of what I have accumulated over the years.

March 7th, 2007 at 10:20 pm
CVS = 10 people working
BVS = 100 people working
[self-employed; currently have 7 other people working with me regularly and can envision at least 70 -- metrics being the # of people affected and income generated]

Having read about CVS versus BVS the other day I cannot get it out of my mind. I want to use it in every day situations. My job or my goal is to become wealthy and I have my goals and resons for doing this. I now feel that using this metric or measurement I can look at my finances and have a true goal of what can be achieved and I will work continuosly to achieve this goal. I am going to use the 10 measurement as a goal to increase my current worth and this will act as measurement of how I am progressing. I now have a set target to achieve.
February 11th, 2007 at 10:29 pm
Don’t get it! In many situations a ten fold increase would be
unrealistic. In some situations even a two fold increase would be beyond one’s wildest dreams.
February 8th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
CVS = average progress towards targets, BVS = 10 times the progress.

cvs= 1 ‘failure’ but that is only one tenth of 10 outcomes!
cvs= ‘people are only co-operative ocasionally but BVs = people are in fact 10 times more co-operative than I am perceiving them to be!

The Current View of the Situation would be to finish the document by the expected deadline.
The Better View of the Situation is to think of a way to finish the document before it is submitted by the client.

Reducing carbon emissions (BVS) =
Use the backs of old print materials as scratch paper (CVS),
Recycle more paper – envelopes, linen wrappers, etc. (CVS),
Bring my water bottle to work instead of using the cups on the water cooler (CVS)
+ Find subtle ways to encourage clients to follow suit without beating them over the head with the message (BVS)

Meeting 10 new managers in 10 weeks to spread 10 health & safety messages. If they each used just one of those messages to remind 10 of their colleagues, then at least 100 people may think about and apply that message. If they used all 10 messages, there is a greater chance of at least one of those being meaningful to each of the 10 colleagues. Hence, a better outcome.

Well, I’m actually on a job search right now and striving for the day that a J.O.B. is no longer required, although I love to work…. It’s just that I prefer it on my own terms, not at the whim of heartless companies.
I have been in the construction industry for 25 years and traveled all over the world with my career; it’s been great. The only problem is that when the project is over, so is the job, and I am left hanging without an income. The past three years I have been in Iraq and over those three years I have been simultaneously building a company “with heart” called jobremoval.com , plus three years prior. With my Iraq contract over I am traveling back to the States and it would seem that “NOW” is the time to multiply my efforts, and by focusing my energy there 100% (a metric power of 10) I will be able to contribute far more to the company’s success than what I have in the past, the CEO and community need me right “NOW”!
This requires CVS2BVS because the fear associated with leaving the security of a J.O.B. paycheck feels a little dicey. “NOW” is the time to leave that behind and focus metric effort on jobremoval.com , so others will be empowered to do the same – quit their jobs by replacing their income; that’s what I wanted isn’t it? Of course it is!! Time to put my mouth where my money is and I feel it coming on like an unstoppable freight train! Yes it is….
We’re talking 100 steps forward baby!
I like the way you think D! money money money……….
