More than 500 years ago Christopher Columbus set sail. The Talavera Commission reported to Queen Isabella on Columbus’ idea – to reach Japan in the East by sailing West and to discover other lands en route – that the adventure was “uncertain and impossible to any educated person.”
They told the queen that the proposed voyage would take three years. Even if the ships could return, which was highly unlikely, the commission reported Columbus’ idea would be a wasted expedition, “for God would surely not have allowed any uninhabited land of real value to be concealed from His people for so many centuries.”
The experts scorned his project. But Columbus did set sail. Thirty-three days later he discovered half the world! I have always thought that Columbus was a very clever brainuser.
Based solely on their accumulated experience, the experts pointed out that the Admiral’s mission was hardly a logical one because his mathematics were wrong. So if his mathematics were wrong therefore Columbus was wrong. They were convinced of the soundness of their logic.
Yet if all our thinking and actions were based only on the “unique rightness” of our own experience, then progress would be slow or impossible. There could be no room for insight, quantum leaps, outside-the-square-thinking, the Aha! insight or the Eureka phenomenon.
There could be no room for humour. There could be no room for humility.
Sometimes experts use their experience not to explore the future, but merely to protect the past. Many an expert arrives at a situation and forms an instant judgement. This quick judgement is based on his unique background, his personal expectations, his values, his mood, his agenda and other factors.
He sees things in a certain way and makes a snap judgement based on his current perceptions. If he is using logic as his main cognitive operating system, the expert often uses his expertise, not as a basis to explore the situation, but merely to back-up and support his snap judgement, and, to keep himself ‘right’.
It seems that the more expert thinkers are, the better they are able to defend their point-of-view so they get trapped in it by their own expertise. They cannot escape their CVS, their Current View of the Situation.
Now I know this never happens to you, dear brainuser, (wink!) but you’ve probably seen other people fall into this hole. And, it’s a very dangerous one to fall into.
The thinker, the clever brainuser, might take a different approach to a proposition presented to him or her. She would use her experience, whether thin or quite formidable, to provide an information basis for exploring the idea. She may notice what she thinks is good about it, and what she thinks is bad about it. Then, she may deliberately set out to notice how it could be improved, perhaps to lead to an even better idea, a Better View of the Situation.
The Thinking Switch
To help you do this we use a little switch called CVS-TO-BVS. The switch is simply a neuroware device for programming cognetics into your short term memory. It takes just one second to use this switch, to say CVS-TO-BVS.
If you will practice this switch for ten days it will become a habit and become a permanent piece of neuroware in your necktop. After ten days, you’ll have it forever.
The Law of Cognetics is::

Just think about that for ten seconds. See if it makes any sense to you and whether you can embrace the law or whether you can’t. Say it to yourself out loud and see how you react to it:

Do you have any trouble with this law? This is really the most important law for thinking. The more you can bring conviction into this, the more it’ll work for you. To simplify this you simply say:

Yes I have put this concept into practice many times, and several times with a team: it’s far more difficult to move out of the CVS bubble into ‘bubble x’ than to imagine we are already in “bubble x” and make it happen. I was given a video of Dr Michael Hewitt-Gleeson to watch regarding CVS to BVS & that is why I am now doing the SOT…& it works I have caught myself being secular in thinking about a situation & saying no Jo stop what is the BVS & believe me it’s helped me to see things differently & come up with some amazing alternatives.

I know that my potential view of things, which I hope is a better view of things, should never be my current view of things. I do sometimes get defensive when someone questions my current opinion, however, I usually take criticisms into consideration to determine whether my opinion has flaws and if it could be improved. I’ve got a long way to go but I’m definitely becoming more and more aware of this.

Always seek the higher perspective. Usually there is an emotional connection, so if you can detach, or perhaps be more of an observer to the situation, you have altered your state of awareness, therefore an opportunity to achieve a different view is logical and possible.

I have really been trying to apply this rule to all areas of life today, job, approaching creative writing, even getting my camera fixed. Just feeling like I have other options obviously not only presents me with greater number of practical solutions but actually mentally liberates me and makes me feel emotionally lighter and more resourceful and positive which in turn feeds back into the BVS stream.
I think giving up being right is also incredibly liberating. Once you agree to mentally put your instinctive or nurtured point of view that automatically supports your thinking to one side without considering it challenged or defective you are able to consider a wider range of alternatives on their own merits rather than how they fit into your usual framework.
This bit I love;
‘It seems that the more expert thinkers are, the better they are able to defend their point-of-view so they get trapped in it by their own expertise. They cannot escape their CVS, their Current View of the Situation.’
I had a highly smart partner who taught training skills and was so self aware and conscious of thinking practices it was like he couldn’t see the wood for the trees, his trees. We are no longer together. His tree you could say.

This is obviously true by definition, but how we define “better” is the crux of the matter. cvs-bvs doesn’t seem to address this issue.

The CVS might actually be the peak of the solution curve or it may not. SO, it is prudent to think that there might be a better point. It may be, too, that the BVS is really BVSs in that the better views are rather like the rim of a saucer, all higher than the low point of the CVS. However, if we are, in a particular moment, at the high point, any move will be to a lower point.
So, we need a meta switch – a way to see what is at the BVS point before we jump.

I hope you will progress to explain why “The more you can bring conviction to this” is potentially the more important element of neuro-programming – ‘Getting the feeling’ – i.e. really emotionally and physically forming a ‘belief’ is a key point I’ve been highlighting for years – CVS to BVS is a great system / tool / principle, but will only work for those who ‘Get the feeling’ for it – who really ‘Take it on board’ and believe in it – and their ability to form a new belief about a new concept is what you’re trying to help them with – a ‘Catch 22′ methinks – as the ability to form a belief – to show an interest with passion, will all depend on their individual experience and WIIFM factors (What’s In It For Me) relative to their imprinting phases and what ‘deep’ programming was imposed upon them during childhood by their significant others (Parents, siblings, teachers, peers etc.).

I’ve been worrying about this since I wrote my response yesterday. I have an in-built resistance to writing things out repeatedly as if I am a zombie, and I was uncomfortable about it while I was doing it. What I want to know is whose view of “better” do we accept? Hitler probably thought that the “better” view of the situation was his, namely a world without Jews. That wasn’t equal to the current situation of his time – it was morally unacceptable, but he would think it was “better”. My problem is that this is open to interpretation and manipulation by anyone, regardless of their moral stance, and could therefore be a justification for the indefensible. Thinking skills are not a morality-free zone.

Michael. After thinking about your “Law of Cognetics,” I question the
“law” part–as well as the “CVS can never be equal to the BVS.”
I’d like to see a better, more precise definition of what you mean
by “better.” Do you account for a “different” view of the situation–or
different views? And what if the “situation” is merely a “concept?”
The “good, better, best” equation is limited and more assumptive
than objective. After all, what you may think is “better,” I may think
isn’t even “good.”
And is there room for a “worse” view of the situation? A view a naive
person has after looking at the “current” view? Their vision may be
clouded by fear, lack of knowledge and/or experience or absolute
stupidity.
So right now, I don’t “buy” this “Law of Cognetics.” There are far too
many variables and questions it raises that it doesn’t answer. Kind
of like trying to define “humour.” There’s no possible “law” that can
classify, pigeonhole or define “humour.” Plenty of brilliant minds
have tried. No one has succeeded. Not even Eric Idle’s android
in THE ROAD TO MARS. So I prefer not to program it. I’d rather
ask more questions about it and see where that leads.

What ever our life experience is, it is an important part of the whole and has great significance. Be in alignment to that which is good and adds to the betterment of mankind.
Be ready for miracles, we live in one and can co-create them. This requires fresh thinking; the status quo will no longer suffice. Be the better view.

My reaction is that short term advantages could be long term disadvantages and short term diadvantages can be long term advantages. Examples abound, global warming as a consequence of unsustainable growth, taking on a job just in order to make money instead of following a dream, marriiage to the wrong man in order to gain status or money and so on.
