Is Google the new Vatican?

Posted on March 4th, 2010 by Michael

There’s always been a direct link between power and corruption.

Writing about the Vatican’s notorious libido dominandi, it’s relentless lust for power, the English historian Lord Acton wrote: Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

DFQ: Will Lord Acton’s dictum also apply to Google’s relentless search for power?

my grandfather often said “believe nothing of what you read and only half of what you see”
Google was before his time but the point is take everything on-line with a grain of salt

Google should be thought of the DNA of our technology lives not as a corrupt and evil source, but the know all , own all, trying to have a presence in every form of our lives…the NEW GOD!

I do not see how… There are several other search engines available, so every user has the right to switch, if he pleases. Besides, technology is in a state of perpetual development. Some bright guy will come up with a better, or more performant, browser to eclipse Google. Finally, Google may find itself in a big trouble finncially and be forced to sell parts of its activities. Nothing like that could ever happen to the Vatican, so I find the analogy inappropriate

Undoubtedly, if Google is intent on world domination, they will succeed. Their corruption will be absolute and the Apocalypse will follow in due course, unless…No, wait! Google is actually the Second Incarnation of the Redeemer. I see it now. Complete and ordered access to all the information ever encoded by human beings, instant recall of 100% of both trivial and relevant information at the click of a key, full and universal access to the knowledge of good and evil…this is what we’ve been waiting for, brothers and sisters! The golden age is at hand. Truly we are blessed! (In the interest of full disclosure, you should know that I bought stock in Google the first day it went public.)
