NEEDED: A brand new political party …

Posted on August 21st, 2010 by Michael

Today I was asked, Why don’t you start a new political party in Australia?

We were having a discussion about the 2010 Australian Federal Elections which are being held today. It’s a contest between three major electoral opinions that are prevailing, each roughly of equal numbers:

Labor, Liberal and Undecided.

I think we need a big change in the way we think about this constitutional contest and the way we do it. We need to move forward from the ancient religious systems -  representative or feudal – and to a post-scientific, electoral networking system.

Twenty-five years ago I coined the term cognocracy to mean ‘a society of individuals who think for themselves’. I did this to anticipate the coming social revolution empowered by technology and individual thinking.

In an interview for Reason Magazine (October 1982) with Patrick Cox I explained what I meant by cognocracy:

“as communications technology improves and people acquire the tools to think for themselves, systems such as democracy, socialism, and communism–where a few do the thinking for the many, who are, if anything, asked simply to vote on other people’s ideas–will be replaced by societies of individuals who think for themselves.”

The advent of the www has made it possible to directly link technology to global brainpower. This  is accelerating a move away from the slow and traditional ‘follow-the-leader’ democracies towards fast opt-in/opt-out cognocracies. These cognocracies are open to anyone, anywhere, anytime … 24/7.

Early examples of cognocracies in evolution can be seen at Wikipedia, Facebook, Google, eBay, YouTube, Blogger, Twitter and LimeWire. Watch this space!

So, on this Election Day 2010 I announce the inauguration of a new Australian political party which is also designed as a new cognocracy:

Isn’t it curious that the punters had their money on a Labor victory…

Now that relentless TV advertising is grooming new generations of punters, we Australians are about to become the biggest gamblers on earth .

Perhaps we could take all political leadership from the odds on “Sportsbet” .. We’ll live in a” Puntocracy” Michael.

Five men will decide which party governs Australia. Why not list them as key cogs in a cognocracy? Their decision will affect everyone, so lets hope they are astute thinkers.

Recently I left my senior position in the Victorian Public Service. During my ten years of service I was fortunate enough to witness the machinery of Government and came to understand how the system works. I now have full clarity on how a culture develops and then takes over an organisation. Government and the Departments that serve the Government to deliver against policy expend most of their effort, time and money feeding the political machine. There are many extremely capable managers and staff in the public sector. Indeed there are also good numbers of visionary leaders to an extent the private sector would be envious. The shame, a very real shame, is that these leaders, managers and staff are caught up in a culture whereby true innovation, efficiency and outputs are not encouraged or rewarded as this represents perceived risk for the political machine at the top of the heap. It is time for revolution in politics and Government. It is time to escape from the culture that pervades Australia and bring about reform that balances public good, societal values and transparency with effort that equates to output, not just cranking of the political machine. For the victory always!

Interesting! It is high time this mob mentality thing is sorted out. I of course am here in India and do not know when if ever our scene here is goin to change though I must say the younger generation (the “twentiers/thirtiers”) are quite out there doin their bit. I have a sneeking feeling that the “fifteeners-nineteeners” of today’s India will do the needful in say five years’ time. I am forty-seven.
